Hi, I am Simon Mainwaring. I work as a resource teacher for senior high students at Bridgetown Regional High School, in the Annapolis Valley.
Apps:
-Pic collage and air drop
ipad the best way to go! There are more apps available but I wonder if a windows tablet has just as many.
-Prizmo: photo text, scen, change to another langauge using a translator app and it reads aloud.
-assistive tech early on (crutch) vs learning to read
Paper pen activity
-writing with left hand
-thinking about letter formation and conent
-cannot just ask kids to get out pen and write
-we get them to scribe (dependency and not independent learning)
PollEv Preesenter (www.polleverywhere.com)
-use to send a repsonse to a live poll and present on screen on the site as a word cloud
Assignments
-itunesU
-learn about an app using google (not a teacher)
-book creator app and publish to ibooks to share
-tellagami (presenter)
-colour splash (bit clours)
-terms: Technological Convergence - compatability of different technologies e.g. music, video, using facebook to message people. All of the different devices and platfoms that share the same features and will ultimately lead to the one device. Your different digital technologuies at home and work are able to 'speak' to eachother e.g. my TV can communicate with my ipad.
-Universal Desgin for Learning - a framework that allows for flexible learning based on different learning styles. Designed for everyone e.g. accessible buildings. Benefitting all students.
-Disruptive Technologies - technology that is introduced that disrupts/ improves/ displaces another technology
-cloud art
-popple
Home assignment
-create a garageband track as intro to the app smash assignment.
Issues:
-crutch of tech
-UDL bypasses a student need to learn to read or write. the use of the technology gives access to reading and writing. In using assistive tech the student is able to share their knowledge. More traditional forms of communication (pen and paper) limit the ability for the student to do this.

These are my notes for the day.
Questions andf thoughts that I have:
- I am excited to be learning about new apps and being given a chance to use them.
- I am concerned because I am not that tevch-savvy even though I have taught tech to grade 12 ( a few years ago).
- I wonder if technology makes kids dependent upon tech and that teachers d not teach skiulls because there is an app for it.
- I also wonder if with the flipped classroom approach, new teachers are directing students to go to websites to learn because they do not have the skills to teach?
- I hope to have answers to these questions over the next 2 weeks.
Hi Simon: good questions. My comment re technology being a crutch... AT provides students with ACCESS to a task. Many students cannot engage in paper based activities without appropriate AT. It is not a crutch it is an equal opportunity. You'll see that throughout the course but also should have been evident in the simulation activities at the beginning of class. I can't wait for you to see what is out there and the true power of the iPad that is a true Universally Designed device that virtually any user can access.
ReplyDeleteI like your question about whether some teachers, just hand out tech. and don`t teach it. I think that if we give it out, we need to ensure that students are producing quality work, just like when we handed them paper and pens.
